Furnace problems are usually pretty easy to detect. Perhaps your system makes a loud or uncomfortable noise. Maybe your neighbor’s furnace smells funky and that’s how a heat exchanger crack was detected. While these issues are obvious, some are less obvious.
For instance, a furnace that abruptly stops working can be a nightmare for homeowners, especially because it can be impossible to detect the issue. There are any number of reasons for a furnace to shut down, most of them are pretty bad and can be expensive to fix.
But in our area, there’s one issue we see furnaces run into often where our customers could actually prevent the problem from occurring in the first place. Keep reading to learn more, and make sure you schedule furnace repair in Crystal Lake, IL with our team!
A Flooded Furnace
Flooding? In the winter? Yep, it’s way more common than you think. This is due to the melting snow that can mix with rain, causing a huge water-drenched disaster. Depending on how much snow we get this winter, we might be in for some extremely wet, but frigidly cold days in the future.
The problem is that many furnaces are only a few inches up from the floor in the basement of homes. This leaves them susceptible to electrical problems, especially when a basement gets extremely humid and wet during a snowmelt day.
Even gas furnaces can be susceptible to electrical shortages, and you might all of a sudden be without heat. This is a situation that warrants callin our team.
Sensitive Electrical Components
Most gas furnaces manufactured today have electrical ignition systems, which start the unit without the use of a pilot light. These are safer and better than old units, but just like pilot lights, they’re susceptible to being ruined by moisture. If water drips down into your gas furnace from the outside pipe, or from a flooding floor, your system will cease to run properly.
Use a Dehumidifer or a Water Pump
We can install a water pump in your exhaust vent or a dehumidifier in your basement to help alleviate the problem with moisture. Once the furnace gets going, it should be able to dry out the air enough to avoid this problem, but on a day where it’s a little bit warmer, it might not run enough to do this on its own. We can help!
